This project aims to increase citizens’ access to improved, gender and human rights compliant mechanisms of informal justice. Under CBDR SRSP strengthens the capacity of community mediators who serve as mediators in conflicts.
Map community mediation mechanisms across Peshawar.

1. CBDR Trainings/ Refresher Courses
Aitbaar project builds the capacity of the community to enforce their legal rights and be aware of their civic responsibilities. It will enable people to resolve their problems according to prevailing laws and regulations. It educates the people in current legal system. It also educates them with access to specific platforms for grievances redressal. It also aims to narrow communication gap between state and citizens by by confidence building measures and sustainable linkages.
The purpose of the trainings is to introduce a selected group of participants to the concept of ADR. Under Aitbaar SRSP is facilitating in enhancing their ADR skills.
2. Mediation/Case Collection
Aitebaar has trained 127 community mediators in mediation, gender and human rights. Out of 127, 106 are male mediators while 21 are female mediators. Most mediators are volunteers. The focus is to train the mediators in gender and human rights compliance. Community mediation will make dispute settlement time and cost efficient.
In first phase, SRSP provided 4 days of training to community mediators and post-training. SRSP's Legal Empowerment Officers engage with trained mediators for data collection and general interaction.
3. Mentoring Activity
Aitebaar trained community mediators in gender and human rights compliant mediation. This activity provides Mentoring to trained community mediators. Mentoring emphasises on gender and human rights compliant mediation and provides technical help.
4. Code of Conduct
The Code of Conduct (“the Code”) provides a framework for self-regulation for the community Mediators. It helps community Mediators to achieve fair settlements in compliance with international standards of human rights, the Constitution and the legislative frameworks of Pakistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). These laws include, pro-women laws, Anti-women Practices Act 2011 (prohibition of swara/bride-giving, inheritance deprivation) family law and child rights.
It also contains recommendations, which individual Mediators may choose to practice.

Standards for Mediators
This Code may can be used by other mediatory non-governmental and community based organizations. The provisions of this Code doesn't replace or contravene, the Pakistan or KP legislative framework and rules.
5. Do No Harm (DNH) Safeguards
This document examines the DNH safeguards to understand how this work might unintentionally contribute to both conflict/tension and human rights violations. The document identified possible harms and existing and potential safeguards (both preventative and monitoring actions). It then mapped the existing and potential safeguards against possible harms, to determine if the safeguards are adequate and to identify recommendations for enhancing them.
The DNH Safeguards document summarizes the issues identified as potentially causing harm and outlines Aitebaar’s approach to putting measures in place to safeguard against the identified, potential and unintended harm (“the harm”). Aitebaar specifically works to assess the feasibility of proposed safeguards; outline if and how Aitebaar can implement them; and propose alternative or further safeguards that could be pursued where possible.
Concentrated efforts to ensure DNH Safeguards are incorporated in all trainings. They focus on Women Rights, Special laws of Women, Children and Islam & Rights of Women, Acid Control and Acid Crime Prevention, Protection Against Harassment of Women and etc.
6. Network of Community Mediators in Peshawar
Aitebaar organizes Networking events for mediators. Mediators collaborate with each other, expand their sphere of influence and address mediation issues in these events.
Currently, Aitebaar trained Mediators team up with fellow Mediators who may or may not have been trained by Aitebaar. It results in coordination and working together in case referrals and mediating disputes. The mediators hope government engagement and their inclusion in government mechanism.
